Subject Leader Statement – Miss Stone

Curriculum Intent for Art and DT
At Chatsworth, we place great importance on children’s understanding of Art, both in terms of learning about it’s history, it’s place within our and other people’s culture’s and learning how to create it. We strive to ensure that children understand the importance and the impact that art, craft and design has on everyday life. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that we create an environment where children have the opportunity to learn the skills to participate and contribute confidently in Art and Design Technology. We believe that this will allow them to learn develop a natural and safe way to express themselves.
Summary of intended impact
The IPC Art and DT curriculum inspires children to develop their individuality and imagination. It allows them to explore a range of inspiring artists from a diverse range of backgrounds. It challenges our children to develop their problem solving, critical thinking and evaluation skills promoting a careful observation and appreciation of the world around them. The pupils at Chatsworth are challenged to develop and refine their artistic skills through a range of different medium and techniques.
Implementation
• Clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the International Primary Curriculum and learning should show progression across all key stages within the strands of Art and DT.
• A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth.
• Subject wide cross curricular teaching-where applicable, skills taught within the Art and DT curriculum are linked to the main learning topic for that term.
• A means to display and celebrate the pupils’ learning within school as well as the wider community.
• British Values and PSHE – Children will learn and revisit the importance of our world, their own role within the world and how it should be treated. For example, Art and DT work inspired by Black History month, Well-being Week etc.
