Learning
Children at Chatsworth are engaged readers, and creative and imaginative writers. We follow the CUSP reading and writing programme https://www.unity-curriculum.co.uk/more-information/primary/#reading&writing that is designed to ensure that all children are exposed to high quality texts and teaches them the different skills that are necessary for reading comprehension. CUSP writing sessions explicitly teach pupils the knowledge and competencies that they need about the different facets of writing and the writing process.
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
Children are exposed to spelling from Reception, where class teachers model the skills of segmenting sounds in a word to spell. This develops as they move through into Year 1 and navigate the extended code. As Year 2 pupils begin to graduate away from phonics, the Bridge to Spelling units teach children how to ‘think about spelling’. The children complete the alphabetic code and learn the underpinning concepts of spelling before moving on to consider etymology, morphology and grammar when spelling new words.
Reading
Foundation and Key Stage 1 classes enjoy and participate in story time sessions daily. Teachers regularly share a range of narrative and non-narrative texts with the whole class. Each class has an engaging, organised book corner which they use throughout the week.
Children need regular opportunities to apply the phonics they have learned by reading fully decodable books. Reading Practice sessions take place for 20 minutes each day starting from Week 4 in Reception. Pupils read with a trained adult in a group session at least three times per week, reading books that are matched the progression of our phonics scheme – Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, and to their secure phonics knowledge.
Sessions focus on decoding, prosody and comprehension, with the aim of ensuring children are blending by Christmas in Reception, meeting expected standard in the Phonics Screening Check by the end of Year One, and securing fluency before they leave us at the end of Year 2 .
Children who require additional support to be successful receive additional support with additional blending practice or one-one daily keep up sessions, and additional opportunities to read with a trained adult.
Reading at home is a vital part of early reading success and establishing a love of reading. Children take home a book matched to their phonic level, as well as a book of their choice from the Book Corner. We encourage parents/carers to hear their child read as regularly as possible and to record feedback in the Home Reading Records, which are brought to school daily. Learning to read takes lots of practice, and frequent opportunities for them to apply what they’ve learned in school is fundamental to success.
